Bloating is when your belly feels swollen after eating. Bloating happens when the GI tract becomes filled with air or gas. This can be caused by something as simple as the food you eat. Some foods produce more gas than others. It can also be caused by lactose intolerance (problems with dairy). Other simple reasons for bloating include: swallowing air while eating too fast, constipation, overeating, or digestive problems, etc.
Apart from paying more attention to what you eat and how your diet affects your stomach, there are other things you can do to get rid of bloating. If you are not constipated, eating more fiber may actually worsen your situation. Whenever you eat very quickly, you end up swallowing too much air every time you take a bite, or whenever you drink with straw, causing it to get stuck in your stomach and fight to get out.
Cooked vegetables are best if you are feeling bloated because non-cooked foods take longer to digest. Avoid drinks that give you gas like coffee, tea, juice, carbonated and alcoholic beverages. Soda that are made with artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol and xylitol also have the same effect. Avoid fried and fatty foods as they are the hardest to digest and will worsen your bloating.
There are some foods like avocado that contain fats that are beneficial to our bodies, and don’t cause bloating or indigestion. Lactose intolerant people often have this problem of bloating. They don’t have the necessary enzymes to break up the sugar present in lactose, therefore, they feel discomfort and swelling.
